Having to explain where your parent or spouse is when they are incarcerated can be extremely difficult. Nathalia Charles and her 7-year-old daughter, Kayla, know that feeling of anxiety all too well. “My friends are asking me, ‘Where’s your dad, where’s your dad?’ And I’m like, ‘He’s at work’,” Kayla told TODAY Parents. “I can’t really tell them.” In 2014, Kayla’s father was arrested and faces up to 25 years in prison. Charles says that telling Kayla about her father’s situation was tough, and she often didn’t know where to turn for support. Since finding Children of Promise, a summer camp and after-school program that provides support to kids with incarcerated family members, Kayla has found comfort and community in coping with the absence of her father.
“When her dad got arrested I didn’t know how to answer her questions,” Nathalia told TODAY Parents. Children of Promise, she said, "has been a saving grace. It’s our second home.”
