Gerry F. Wheeler is the Executive Director Emeritus of the National Science Teachers Association. Wheeler served as the Executive Director of NSTA for 13 years, retiring from the association in August 2008. During his tenure at NSTA, Wheeler was instrumental in the formation and implementation of NSTA's long-term vision to guide the association's efforts within the science education community and to make its voice known in the national policy arena. Wheeler also helped increase the association’s membership significantly, particularly among new science teachers. Prior to his NSTA position, he was a Professor of Physics at Montana State University, Director of the Science/Math Resource Center, and Program Director for AAAS in the area of public understanding of science and technology. Trained as a nuclear physicist, Dr. Wheeler has received numerous recognitions for his teaching and mass media work. Since his retirement from NSTA, Wheeler has continued to be an active and prominent leader in science education. He is currently the President of QualitySTEMEducaton, Inc., a Montana organization that helps to build awareness in the state about the importance of high-quality STEM education for students.
