Tyler Hilinski was a 21-year-old star quarterback for Washington State who tragically died by suicide in January. His autopsy revealed that he had the degenerative brain condition, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), at the time of his death. After their tragic loss, Tyler’s parents are working to raise awareness about the disease and about the mental health struggles college athletes face. They are encouraging parents of college athletes to look out for warning signs of mental illness, and want sports teams to have more detailed and frequent mental health check-ins for their athletes. While teams spend a lot of time on their athletes’ physical health, mental health is just as important.
