On Monday, The Boy Scouts of America made history as they began accepting transgender children into their programs. The organization’s 100-year-old rule of being born male is no longer a prerequisite to join the program. They will now accept young people based on their gender identity. In an official statement, Spokeswoman Effie Dilamarkos said, "Starting today, we will accept and register youth in the Cub and Boy Scout programs based on the gender identity indicated on the application. Our organizations and local councils will help find units that can provide for the best interest of the child." This decision comes 18 months after the organization decided to allow gay adults to become Scout leaders.
